The call came in at 8 a.m. sharp. The guy
was frazzled, but they always are. It was the usual story:
missing emails, failed web site -- even the guy's dog hates
it. Plus he can't add new products, because the designer has
locked him out of his own site. Looked like another Web site
hostage rescue operation. You'd think people would be more
careful who they sleep with.
At least the poor sap had some money left.
I ran a whois on the InterNIC. Registered in the designer's
name ... so what's new? An ugly business, unless you like
filling out NIC forms.
But the first thing was to rescue the code
and images, with no one the wiser. This baby was stuffed to
the gills with .cgi. We'd need it later. I tried a soft probe
on the server, but no go. I was going to need Fred the Mole
for this one. I emailed him and started
downloading images....
