I recently watched the trailer for the upcoming film cleverly titled The Nativity Story and was suddenly overcome with the now-familiar fear that North American culture is drifting towards becoming a medieval theocratic nation/state. Another story about Jesus, told complete with Middle-eastern music and majestic cinematography making claims to be "historically accurate". If things keep going this way, pretty soon that's all we'll be allowed to see. Yes, I'm aware that the Director, Catherine Hardwicke, has a track record that does not necessarily oblige this film to be the next Passion, but come on. Aren't we as a society capable of producing more than gussied-up Sunday school stories? Heck - even Superman Returns had pretty seriously Christian overtones, on a different scale entirely from Donner's original film.

yesh, I missed the part where we were rounded up and forced to sit through them... I'm a Christian that doesn't go to these movies (I feel that they're just a modern version of idolatry) but I'm not going to complain about other people seeing what they want to see any more than I complained about the Da Vinci Code movie, the Brown Bunny, or Million Dollar Baby...
Fair enough Jeff - I was only extrapolating trends. For the record, I see hardly any first-run films.
My point was basically a response to how there's a moral imperative applied to seeing these films that doesn't sit well with my sensibilities. No agnostic was telling me that I MUST see the Da Vinci Code, but so many groups around the time of the Passion made seeing that film of supreme urgency. I don't like that kind of "rule by guilt".
Besides, the reason why these films continue to be made and the reason the heavy-handed symbolism is popping up everywhere is one of simple economics. That's part of what makes it frightening - once upon a time, gussied-up B-movies hit big at the box office, and now the American industry produces them and little else.
